Volunteer Opportunities

Introduction

The following positions are currently vacant and in need of volunteer support. There are two categories of volunteers:
  • Mission Critical Volunteers
    • These positions MUST be filled before the start of the August 2023 program year. 
  • Program Support Volunteers
    • These positions are NICE TO HAVE, and make the Pack workload lighter on our Mission Critical Volunteers. 

Mission Critical Volunteer Vacancies

Assistant Committee Chair (1 Vacancy)
This position reports to the Committee Chair, and is the defacto next​ Committee Chair in training. 

Responsibilities
  • Maintain a close relationship with the chartered organization representative and the chartered organization to cultivate harmonious relations and maintain communications.
  • Confer with the Cubmaster on policy matters relating to Cub Scouting and the chartered organization.
  • Supervise pack committee operation by:
    • Calling and presiding at pack leaders’ meetings.
    • Assigning duties to committee members.
    • Planning for pack charter review, roundup, and reregistration.
    • Approving bills before payment by the pack treasurer.
  • Conduct the annual pack program planning conference  and pack leaders’ meetings.
  • Ask the committee to assist with recommendations for Cubmaster, assistant Cubmasters, and den leaders,  as needed.
  • Recognize the need for more dens, and see that they are formed as needed.
  • Work with the chartered organization representative to provide adequate and safe facilities for pack meetings.
  • Cooperate with the Cubmaster on council-approved money-earning projects so the pack can earn money for materials and equipment.
  • If the Cubmaster is unable to serve, assume active  direction of the pack until a successor is recruited  and registered.
  • Appoint a committee member or other registered adult to be responsible for Youth Protection training.
  • Develop and maintain strong pack-troop relationships, and work closely with the unit commissioner and other pack and troop leaders in bringing about a smooth transition of Webelos Scouts into the troop.
  • Support the policies of the BSA.

Time Commitment
This position will require, on average, 2 hours of time per month, in addition to attending scheduled events.
Assistant Cubmaster (1 Vacancy)
​This position reports to the Cubmaster, and is the defacto next​ Cubmaster in training.

Responsibilities 
  • Deliver a quality, fun, year-round program to the Cub Pack
  • Conduct the program according to BSA policies
  • Receive the appropriate training, including Cubmaster specific training
  • Attend monthly Cub Scout Roundtables, to receive information about district and council policies and programs
  • Carry out the Pack program with the support of the Pack Committee, including leading monthly pack meetings
  • Carry out the goals of the chartering organization within the Pack program
  • Work with the Pack Committee to recruit adult leadership
  • Work with the Pack Committee to develop the Pack budget
  • Support the Pack Den Leaders and encourage them to get the appropriate training
  • Encourage the Pack Den Leaders to work toward Cub Scout Leader awards
  • Encourage Webelos to cross over to a Scouts BSA Troop
  • Communicate with parents about the Pack program and help to educate them about the Cub Scout program
  • Encourage family participation in the Cub Scout program
  • Encourage the Pack to participate in service projects
  • Work with the Assistant Cubmasters, delegating as necessary
  • Attend and participate in Pack Committee planning meetings
  • Recruit Den Chiefs to assist the Pack Den Leaders
  • Incorporate traditional Scouting elements, such as flag ceremonies, skits, and songs, into the Pack program
  • Encourage advancement and recognize Cub Scouts when they advance

Time Commitment
This position will require, on average, 1 to 2 hours of time per month, in addition to attending scheduled events.

Assistant Treasurer (1 Vacancy) (2 Volunteers Pending)
​This position reports to the Treasurer, and is the defacto next​ Treasurer in training. 

Responsibilities
  • Manage the funds of the Pack.
  • Maintain the Pack bank account.
  • Oversee Pack account at Occoneechee Council office
  • Accept and track dues payments.
  • Deposit checks and other funds into the Pack accounts.
  • Produce checks or other means of payment for Pack expenses.
  • Maintain and produce financial report(s) for Committee meetings.

Time Commitment
This position will require, on average, 1 hour of time per month.

Membership Chair & Assistant Membership Chair (1 Vacancy Each) 
​(2 Volunteers Pending)
​The Membership Chair reports to the Committee Chair, and the Assistant Membership Chair reports to the Membership Chair. Defacto, the Assistant Membership Chair is the next Membership Chair in training. 

Responsibilities
  • Provide information on the Cub Scout program and Pack 301 to new and prospective members.
  • Assist new scout families with connecting with the den leader for their age group.
  • Enroll new scouts in the Pack, including collecting applications and other required forms.
  • Enter newly enrolled scouts in the Scoutbook and associated electronic systems.
  • Work with the NCAC Council Registrar to remedy any membership issues.
  • ​Assist with the recharter process by providing up-to-date membership information on scouts and adult leaders to be rechartered for the next year.


Time Commitment
This position will require, on average, 1 to 2 hours of time per month, with some additional time required during recharter season (August - October).

Den Leaders (Multiple Vacancies) 
(1 Volunteer Pending, Lion Den)
(1 Volunteer Pending, Tiger Den)
​(1 Volunteer Pending, Bear Den)

Responsibilities
  • Work directly with other den and pack leaders to ensure that their den is an active and successful part of the pack.
  • Plan, prepare for, and conduct den meetings with the assistant den leader.
  • Attend the pack leaders' meetings.
  • Lead the den at monthly pack activities.
  • Complete Cub Scout den leader Fast Start Training and position-specific Basic Leader Training.
  • Attend monthly roundtables when able.
  • Lead the den in its participation at pack meetings.
  • Help the Cubmaster (or assistant Cubmaster) and pack committee recruit new boys throughout the year.
  • With the assistant den leader, plan den meetings and den activities.
  • Use Boys' Life and Scouting magazines, Cub Scout Program Helps, the boys' handbooks, and other Cub Scouting literature as sources for program ideas.
  • Maintain a friendly relationship with Cub Scouts; encourage them to earn advancement awards. Keep accurate advancement records and see that boys receive recognition for their achievements.
  • Help the den and pack earn the National Summertime Pack Award.
  • Help establish a close working relationship with the assistant den leader.
  • Develop and maintain a good working relationship and open communication with den families. Use their talents to help enrich the den program. Hold den adults' meetings as often as needed to get acquainted with family members and strengthen den operation.
  • See that a leader is available for all den meetings and activities. Call on the assistant den leader to fill in when necessary.
  • Take part in the annual pack program planning conference and pack leaders' meetings.
  • Help set a good example for the boys through behavior, attitude, and proper uniform.
  • Support the policies of the BSA.

Program Support Volunteer Vacancies

​Quartermaster ​(1 Vacancy)
Quartermasters serve as the Pack's supply boss. They keep an inventory of Pack equipment and see that the gear is in good condition. They work with den leaders as they check out equipment and return it. At leadership meetings they report on the status of equipment in need of replacement or repair. Additionally, they source price quotes when needed to order replacement equipment. 

Responsibilities
  • keeps records on Pack equipment
  • makes sure equipment is in good working condition
  • issues equipment and makes sure it is returned in good condition
  • makes suggestions for new or replacement items

Time Commitment
​​This position will require, on average, 1 hour of time per month.
Advancements Chair (1 Vacancy)
(2 Volunteers Pending)

The Advancement Chair can help the Cubmaster and other leaders in putting on recognition ceremonies by preparing advancement materials in advance of the pack meeting, getting signatures on award cards from the den leaders and Cubmaster, and organizing everything so they’re easy to present. 

Responsibilities
  • Have a working knowledge of the Tiger Cub, Cub Scout, and Webelos Scout advancement plans. 
  • Help plan and conduct induction and advancement recognition ceremonies. 
  • Arrange for ceremonies with the Cubmaster and den leaders. 
  • Arrange for Webelos graduation ceremonies with the Cubmaster, Webelos den leader, and Scoutmaster. 
  • Track advancements in the Scoutbook system.
  • Arrange for, maintain and purchase (with pack committee approval), and organize with Cubmaster and den leaders the patches, certificates, and other recognitions items for Scouts and Scout Leaders, as well as den and pack level awards. 
  • Collect den advancement reports at pack leaders' meetings for use when ordering badges and insignia from the local council service center. 
  • Help build or obtain advancement equipment for use in making advancement ceremonies more effective
  • Maintain and track the pack inventory of advancement regalia

Time Commitment

This position will require, on average, 2 hours of time per month.​

Assistant Den Leaders (Multiple Vacancies)
See requirements for Den Leader above. 
Camping & Activities Coordinators (2 Vacancies)
Responsibilities
  • Help the Cubmaster and Committee Chair plan and arrange for outdoor activities and campouts.
  • Arrange for property, fire, and tour permits when required.
  • Arrange for safe transportation when needed.
  • Plan first aid for emergencies.
  • Help plan overnight campouts. Help arrange for equipment as needed.
  • Plan outings to help pack and dens qualify for the National Summertime Pack Award.
  • Ensure that at least one adult has completed Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) before any pack campout.
  • Help promote day camp and resident camp opportunities.
  • Be aware of BSA health and safety requirements, and see that they are implemented.
  • Know and carry out BSA outdoor program policy related to Cub Scouting. Review all activities to ensure that unit leaders comply with BSA policies in the Guide to Safe Scouting.

Time Commitment

This position will require, on average, 2 to 4 hours of time per month (1 hour per week), in addition to attending Pack activities.​
Popcorn Fundraiser Committee (5 Vacancies)
The popcorn committee is responsible for the overall organization and implementation of the unit’s popcorn sale. This person ensures promotion, timely report of unit sales, popcorn pick up, and popcorn payment. The committee reports to the Pack Popcorn Kernel.

Time Commitment
​​​​​
This position will require a time commitment of 1-2 hours per week from July through October.​ The more members recruited to the committee, the less overall average time is required per member.
Social Media Coordinator (2 Vacancies)
Edit, recruit, and moderate membership to the Pack's Facebook and other social media accounts. Post updates and photos as needed.

This position will require a time commitment of 1 hour per month. 
Webmaster / Assistant Webmaster (1 Vacancy Each)
Edit, build and maintain the Pack website. Create registration forms and download form submissions as needed.
