Introduction
Since its founding in 1749, Alexandrians from all walks of life have taken part of – some even playing key roles in – many of the storied events of Virginia and the United States. They were men and women, brothers and sisters, wife’s and husband’s, mothers and fathers, aunts and uncles, grandparents and grandchildren. They lived their lives and loved their families. They ran their businesses or worked their jobs. They tended to their crops or their animals. They attended their churches and helped each other. Some fought in wars and died while in battle, others survived and came home to rebuild. No matter their status or their station in life, they all were Alexandrians with stories to tell.
When they died, many were buried in either the original Old Town 18th century burial grounds and graveyards, or in one of the thirteen cemeteries found in the historic Wilkes Street Cemetery Complex which is located one-mile west of the original 60-acre town. Collectively, the cemeteries and graveyards of Alexandria, Virginia are among the most historic in the United States of America.
These are their stories, one gravestone at a time, read them and discover who they really were, and you might even find out that when it comes to America’s history, all roads do in fact lead through Alexandria!
Join the Superintendent of The Presbyterian Cemetery and Cub Scout Pack 301 during a tour of the historic Wilkes Street Cemetery Complex. Hear the true stories about those now resting in peace and whose lives were sometimes stranger than fiction!
